Microsoft to Open Retail Stores

Look out Apple there a New Kid in town. It look like Microsoft wants to play head to head with Apple and open its own branded Stores. This is an interesting play, I wonder what the channel will say. Apple basically killed a lot of its channel when it opened stores. This will be tricky for Microsoft but with over 95% of it income coming from the channel this will need to be watched.

What if the Microsoft store are that place to look at new technology, Like surface, Play with Xbox, and Perhaps teach users about the Cloud Solutions. You know their need to be a experts zone.

I wonder could this also be the way that Microsoft Branded devices get announced. Hum….Maybe a Zune combo Device, New version of Home Server, I wonder what else Microsoft has up it sleeve.

REDMOND, Wash. — Feb. 12, 2009 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that David Porter will join the company as corporate vice president of Retail Stores. He will lead Microsoft’s efforts to create a better PC and Microsoft retail purchase experience for consumers worldwide through the development and opening of the company’s own retail stores. Porter will report to Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner. He is joining Microsoft from DreamWorks Animation SKG, where he was head of worldwide product distribution

Porter spent 25 years at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in roles of increasing responsibility and seniority in store operations, merchandising and information technology. In his last role at Wal-Mart, Porter was vice president and general merchandise manager of Entertainment, where he served as a strategic point of influence throughout the Wal-Mart business.

Hum… general merchandise manager of Entertainment. Maybe there going to be a new life in Xbox, PC games, Zune, and fun products at the Microsoft Stores….. Time will tell

Hard Fault memory Error Explained

II have been asked what is a hard memory fault.  While using Task Manager’s "Resource Monitor", the Memory section is showing several "Hard Faults".  I assume this is not a "Page Fault" (causing a memory-disk swap) because I expect there would be thousands (not dozens) over time.  What is a memory "Hard Fault"?

A:

Apparently there are now two types of Page Faults: Hard Faults when the desired page is not in the memory cache and can be found on the hard disk and Soft Faults when the desired page is found elsewhere in memory (Ready Boost?) I found this information on MSDN at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964785(VS.85).aspx.

Computer Security

I get asked a lot what operating system is most secure. There is a simple answer, The one that patched. Then they ask why is Windows have so many patches.

The true is that all operating system have issues!

I hear Linux is much more secure that windows. Not True, look at the patches for Linux and you find lot more for Linux then windows.

But most important look at there rest of your system

Have you patch your browser, QuickTime, update the firmware on your router ?

So how do you find out about all you computer equipment in one spot go to http://secunia.com/advisories and look at the products  you have.

This site will tell you that you Router, Printer,  Cell Phone has an security issue and how to fix it. Yes I said Cell Phone, if you have an Apple iPhone there are over 7 advisories and, 53 Vulnerabilities.

If you want to be secure do the following;

1. Think before you open, or download items

2. Do not login as an Administrator (Vista and UAC’s can protect you here)

3. Patch your computer

4. Patch your applications

5. Patch your hardware

6. Be careful with e-mail it  is an easy way for people to steal your identify. If you won something, or you can buy something for a lot less than any where else be very concerned. My advise if you get e-mail from someone you do not know, do not read it.

Cell Phone Trick

Add in your  phone the Name ICE as a contact (In Case of Emergency) with a phone number of you family member in case of emergency that the Paramedics or emergency room. This way if you are injured or incapacitated then call get you family.

To add other emergency contacts add ICE, the ICE1, ICE2 and so one.

Please spread the word and help EMS help you when you can not.

Windows 7 Lineup Announced

Windows 7 there will be two primary editions: Windows 7 Home Premium, and Windows 7 Professional. We think those two SKUs will meet most customers’ needs.

Windows 7 Home Premium is the recommended choice for consumers. It gives them a full-function PC experience and a visually rich environment in everything from the way they experience entertainment to the way they connect their devices.

Windows 7 Professional is the recommended choice for small businesses and for people who work at home but have to operate in an IT-managed or business environment where security and productivity are critical. For those running Windows Vista Business, it will be a very logical move to Windows 7 Professional.
